To be fair, "beyond a shadow of a doubt" is not the legal standard ("beyond a reasonable doubt" is high, but not that high), and that's something we as a society have already agreed to... and, sadly, I imagine that in many of these cases the prosecutor and jury WERE 100% convinced they had the right guy.
I am a great believer in conservation and not wasting things. The death penalty is a waste of a human resource. But I am against allowing criminals to languish behind bars while they cultivate and continue to maintain their gang cultures and criminal behaviors. Prison for the tough crimials should be tough with a regimented course of rehabilitation and sensible eductation. Hard labor to pay back society also makes sense to me. I'm just sick of our tax dollars going to give prisoners a better education in how to be more criminally minded, tougher, sicker, and more perverse. Lee
Ditto. And I had the opposite feeling toward the death penalty until about 3 years ago. I learned stuff.
ReplyDeleteSheesh. I think the people who convicted him without having guilt BEYOND A SHADOW OF A DOUBT should have to serve 40 years in prison as punishment.
